Research into our Creative Economy Gets a Boost

Australian Research Council (ARC) Chief Executive Officer, Professor Margaret Sheil, yesterday announced that the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Creative Industries and Innovation (CCI) will receive almost $6 million in further funding. The announcement confirms CCI’s status as Australia’s premier research centre into the impact on the broader economy of the emerging creative sector.

Since it began in 2006, the CCI has rapidly developed an international reputation as a research leader in the understanding of creativity and the creative industries for Australia’s economic future. The ARC has extended its support for the Centre through to 2013.

According to the Centre’s Director Professor Stuart Cunningham, “during the next four years we will continue our commitment to research in the Creative Industries in order to further expose the significant and growing impact of this sector in the twenty-first century.”

“The creative sector uses labour inputs intensely and those involved are usually intensely engaged, as creative activity brings together a sense of identity and an occupation. This is especially important in difficult economic times”, he said.

“The creative industries are important drivers of the knowledge economy and enablers for other industry sectors, especially through the provision of digital content”, added CCI Research Director John Hartley. “Content and creative industries constitute an increasingly significant element of developed nations’ economies and their input into economy and society in general has given rise to the notion of a creative economy”.
